Power Generation & Distribution
  • 400 megawatt generation facility; power for 430,000 homes
  • water-cooled generation: smaller, more efficient energy facility; water to be drawn from unused reservoir, not from the river or aquifer
  • output goes directly to Westfield and surrounding communities; un-used portion will be distributed through the New England grid
  • natural gas generation emits one-third the carbon of coal-fired plant, per megawatt

Fuels & Other Materials
  • primary fuel is natural gas; delivery by pipeline allows for minimal traffic increase (minimal trucking required)
  • to allow natural gas flow to residential home heating market during winter months, the Energy Center will use Ultra Low Sulfate Distillate (ULSD) fuel for two months of the year. ULSD has approximately the same sulfur emission rates as natural gas
  • ULSD fuel storage tanks (above-ground) with capacity for 1 million gal.
  • system being designed to incorporate future compatibility with bio-fuels for use in this 2-month winter heating season
  • facility also will utilize hydrogen for generator cooling; transport and storage highly regulated, established practices, full compliance

Site Location Information
